Who doesn’t love a bit of chocolate?! Here’s how to enjoy it and still be healthy.

Who doesn’t like a bit of chocolate? I love chocolate, my sweet tooth is probably my biggest weakness but the good news is that you can enjoy chocolate and still be healthy.

Raw cacao

This ingredient has changed my life, I absolutely love it. It makes everything chocolatey and the good thing is that it’s full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It’s different from the usual store bought cocoa powder as it’s unprocessed and doesn’t contain anything other than raw cacao goodness. Add to smoothies for a chocolate like milkshake, add it to some healthy muffins for chocolate muffins or you can make delicious puddings with it as well. My favourite dessert is a recipe from Oh She Glows, Almost Instant Chocolate Chia pudding, it’s just like chocolate mousse, delicious!

Ice-cream

Want to enjoy a bit of chocolate ice-cream, then head for the chiller cabinet in your local health food store and if you’re lucky you’ll find Booja Booja Hunky Punky Chocolate ice-cream. Made from only 4 ingredients; water, agave syrup, cashew nuts and cocoa. A good healthy alternative. If you’re allergic to nuts, try a coconut version.

Good old fashioned chocolate bars

When I was studying nutrition the only alternative to your every day commercial chocolate bar was carob. I don’t know if you’ve tried it but it really wasn’t a great alternative. The good news is that there are lots of healthy alternatives out there now, and you can also get great quality dark chocolate to enjoy too. Here are a few of my favourite brands.

Ocelate chocolate

This chocolate is pure indulgence, handmade by Matt & Ish in Edinburgh, Ocelot chocolate is organic and either 70% or 75% cacao (if you’re going to eat dark chocolate make sure it has a high percentage of cacao). It’s also dairy, gluten, wheat and soy free, so suitable for vegans and vegetarians. For a real treat try their truffles. And if that’s not all, it has the most amazing packaging, also designed my Matt & Ish.

Booja Booja

I don’t just love Booja Booja ice-cream but their chocolate truffles too. My favourite are the raspberry truffles. All their truffles are organic, dairy free, gluten free and soya free.

Lovechock

I’ve fallen in love with Lovechock simply for the little messages you get in each bar, it’s such a lovely touch and makes me so happy! Last night’s message was ‘I am a blessed person’. Lovechock is 100% raw chocolate, organic and is sweetened with coconut blossom. Flavours include Goji and Orange (my favourite), Pineapple and Incaberry, Almond and Fig and Mulberry and Vanilla.

Ombar

Ombar are on a mission to create the most nutritious and delicious raw chocolate bar, they’re doing a good job! This chocolate is made from coconut cream which makes it deliciously creamy. It’s dairy and refined sugar free, and as an added bonus they add a dose of friendly bacteria.

Conscious chocolate

Perfectly raw chocolate and there are so many flavours to choose from; essential orange, cranberry kiss, goji and coconut, mint hint and cheeky cherry, to name a few. Conscious chocolate is organic and free from dairy, soya, gluten and refined sugar.

You want to look for good quality chocolate, ideally without refined sugar, a high % of raw cacao and all natural ingredients. And finally to be truly healthy, enjoy in moderation (1-2 pieces a few times a week).
