Being on holiday always gives you the space to think about things. I know lots of people who come back from their holiday vowing to leave work on time, to take breaks and better look after themselves. This is especially true of the new year when everyone has been off over Christmas.
But the trick is to make it stick. You have to make a promise to yourself.
I take pretty good care of myself but there’s always room for improvement! And recently I’ve noticed that I haven’t been taking breaks. The days have been running away with me and before I know it, it’s time to finish work and go and get the kids.
So I’ve written myself a manifesto. A manifesto that will shape my days.
Each day I will …
Start my day with 3 deep breathes
End my day with 3 deep breathes
Wake up at 6.30am
Go to bed by 10.30pm
Take regular breaks
Eat consciously and mindfully
Be kind to myself, and others
Listen to and trust my intuition
Turn off all technology by 8pm
What’s your manifesto? Your commitment to yourself?
Here are some tips about how to make it stick:
Get other people on board – do it together, working with a buddy or even a group of friends can make you more successful as you’re accountable to each other.
Print off your manifesto and remind yourself every now and then what you wanted to achieve. You may even decide to change something that isn’t working for you.
Remember what’s truly important to you. What are the most important things in your life? This helps to get a bit of perspective on what really matters.
And don’t worry if your days don’t always go like this, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about setting an intention and making small changes to help you on your journey.
